In Session 5 of the Pediatric Cardiac Morphology Master Class, Robert Anderson, MD, FRCPath, Lizabeth Lanford, MD, Victor Morell, MD, and Diane Spicer, BS, PA (ASCP), describe anomalous pulmonary veins.

  • Dr. Anderson opens the session with the development of pulmonary veins
  • Ms. Spicer explains pulmonary venous abnormalities and associated malformations including totally anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) and partially anomalous pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC)
  • Dr. Lanford presents echocardiography of anomalous pulmonary veins
  • Dr. Morell concludes the session presenting surgical management of PAPVR and identifies Scimitar syndrome as the most complex form of PAPVR

Educational Objectives 

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the embryologic origin of the normal pulmonary veins
  • Describe the surgical approach to partial anomalous pulmonary venous repair techniques
  • Describe types of anomalous pulmonary veins and what they encompass
  • Examine echocardiograms for different types of anomalous pulmonary venous connections
  • Review atrial arrhythmias and how they are common early and late complications in patients with PAPVR
