Neurology Our Program

UPMC Neurology

UPMC's neurology faculty is nationally recognized for its work in movement and seizure disorders, Alzheimer's disease, and stroke. Our team is building an understanding of neurologic disease from the ground up with technology such as our investigational PET-imaging tracer – Pittsburgh Compound B – which is providing a window into the complex, nonlinear relationship between plaque formation and symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. This novel tracer allows researchers to identify amyloid deposits, which could be predictive of the onset of Alzheimer's, on the PET scan of the live patient.

Other translational research initiatives include our stroke program, which is pioneering new pharmacologic and minimally invasive emergency surgical interventions to prevent or limit post-stroke disability; and our study of movement disorders, which is revealing both cellular and environmental origins.

These research efforts – combined with our expanded, novel treatment programs in severe headache, functional neurosurgery, and epilepsy – position our department to translate bench results into improved therapy.

Featured Program: Stroke Telemedicine Program

The UPMC Stroke Telemedicine Program is one of the leading stroke telemedicine programs in the United States.

Using state-of-the-art videoconferencing technology to link experts at the UPMC Stroke Institute to emergency department physicians in community hospitals, the program provides 24-hour, seven-day-a-week coverage for patients in outlying areas.

These special units enable UPMC's stroke specialists to evaluate possible stroke patients remotely, in real time, on an emergent basis. This approach saves precious time and facilitates the timely administration of TPA, if appropriate, or other interventions.

UPMC' steam will soon publish a study showing that patient outcomes from stroke telemedicine are equal to those from face-to-face care.
