Urology Our Program

UPMC Department of Urology

The Department of Urology at UPMC is at the forefront of providing clinical services, innovative treatment strategies, and fundamental research for diseases of the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive organs. We offer a multidisciplinary approach to care, with our team of clinicians and researchers working together to make available the very latest in diagnostic and treatment options for urologic disease. Among the conditions we treat are:

  • benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
  • bladder cancer
  • erectile dysfunction
  • kidney cancer
  • kidney stones
  • male infertility
  • penile cancer
  • prostate cancer
  • Testicular Cancer
  • ureteropelvic junction obstruction
  • urinary incontinence
  • urinary tract infection
  • vasectomy

We also treat a number of pediatric urologic conditions, including:

  • bladder exstrophy
  • hypospadias
  • prenatal hydronephrosis
  • pediatric stone disease
  • undescended testicle
  • vesicoureteral reflux

Through the Comprehensive Prostate and Urologic Cancer Center, we provide state-of-the-art treatments and therapies for patients with prostate and urologic cancers. We are national leaders in highly specialized technologies and minimally invasive surgical techniques, many of which have been developed or refined by UPMC surgeons.

Featured program: Urology Research for Prostate Cancer

The UPMC Department of Urology is one of the largest urology research groups in the world. Basic research on tumor metastasis, new therapies for hormone-refractory prostate cancer, and the altered metabolism of cancer cells are showing great promise for future therapeutic treatment.

We're working to translate basic observations into novel biomarkers, such as the powerful computer-based method we're developing to identify cancer even when screenings appear normal, and new clinical trials, such as our efforts targeting endothelin in advanced prostate cancer and utilizing cesium as a radiation source for brachytherapy.

And we're pioneering innovative approaches to prostate cancer surgery, including our internationally known work with minimally-invasive robotic prostate cancer surgery and nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy, a technique in which the cancerous prostate gland is removed while preserving the adjacent nerves that control erections.

Clinical Research

The UPMC Department of Urology's state-of-the-art clinical setting combined with a strong commitment to research results in an ideal environment for translating bench science to clinical practice. The Department of Urology maintains a robust research program that encompasses both basic and clinical studies in several areas, including:

  • the molecular mechanisms underlying prostate and other urogenital cancers
  • the development of new biomarkers and therapeutic strategies for these diseases
  • the effect of hormones and diet on cancer

A key advantage of our research program is that our physician-researchers have access to a substantial tissue bank that not only consists of tumors from a variety of urogenital cancers, but also tissue from cancer-free donors. The bank also makes available tissue microarrays and, importantly, extensive clinical follow-up data exists for the tissue donors. Thus, the tissue bank allows studies to be done in the context of real human disease.
