Drs. Melvin Field, Paul Gardner, Brian Jankowitz, L. Dade Lunsford, Ian Pollack, R. Mark Richardson, and Raymond Sekula discuss new advances and updates on the future of surgery for epilepsy and movement disorders.

Educational Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Explain some of the key developments in less invasive neurosurgery, and recall some of the key surgeons involved with teaching many of the newer minimally invasive techniques
  • Identify patients with modern options for brain and skull base lesions and describe a new methods to perform cerebral angiography, and how to bypass the blood brain barrier and monitor brain activity
  • Explain the history of image-guided neurosurgery at UPMC, recognize the impact of image-guided neurosurgery at UPMC
  • Recognize the existence of diverse molecular pathways in pediatric brain tumors, and be able to MAP kinase pathway alterations in pediatric low-grade gliomas
  • Recognize the increasing role of endoscopy in the treatment of pediatric hydrocephalus
  • Explain the future of functional neurosurgery, and recognize the important facet of bci and identify future treatment focus
  • Recall the use of high-resolution MRI sequences to determine extent of vascular compression of the trigeminal nerve and increase trigeminal neuralgia patients’ outcomes
