Dempsey L. Hughes, MD, Joins the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute and the UPMC Center for Liver Diseases

Dempsey L. Hughes, MD, has joined the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute and the UPMC Center for Liver Diseases as clinical assistant professor. She is board certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Hughes is currently a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society, American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), American College of Gastroenterology Endoscopy (ASGE), American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), and the American Society of Transplantation.

Education and Training

Dr. Hughes completed her residency in internal medicine at the Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, MA. She completed her fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Colorado in Aurora, CO., as well as her fellowship in transplant hepatology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI.

Research Interests and Awards

Dr. Hughes has clinical interests in cardiac risk stratification among adult liver transplant candidates and posttransplant outcomes including the development of fatty liver disease among liver transplant recipients.

In 2019, Dr. Hughes was selected for the Young Physician Scholars Leadership Program by the American College of Gastroenterology. Dr. Hughes also received first place honors in the Academic Debates program (“Should Living Donors be Compensated for Donation? – Pro”), at the 2019 Controversies in Transplantation conference. While in her residency, she also twice received teaching honors awarded by the students of Tufts University School of Medicine.
