Dr. Anita Courcoulas is a bariatric and general surgeon at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC. She is a Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Section of Minimally Invasive Bariatric and General Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She received her undergraduate degree at Brown University and her medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine.

She completed her surgical training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, along with advanced training in pediatric, trauma, and minimally invasive surgery. She specializes in the laparoscopic approach to treat obesity and other diseases of the foregut. Dr. Courcoulas' particular areas of interest include the surgical treatment of massive obesity, gastroesophageal reflux disease and obesity, and the cancer risks of obesity.

Dr. Courcoulas has published and authored over 50 articles, book chapters, and reviews related to pediatric, trauma, bariatric, and minimally invasive surgery. She is a committed teacher and has lectured extensively across the United States on a variety of subjects related to her fields of expertise.

Dr. Courcoulas is also very active in clinical outcomes research, leading the NIH/ NIDDK-sponsored Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery and several other related ancillary studies that are evaluating various outcomes following weight loss surgery. She also has a special interest in the evaluation of new surgical treatments and technology.

Dr. Courcoulas is an active member of several professional and scientific societies, including the American College of Surgeons, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, The International Foundation for the Surgery of Obesity, the American Obesity Association, the Central Surgical Association, and SAGES. She is also an active member in Sigma Xi and Alpha Omega Alpha scientific and medical honor societies.
