In UPMC’s Heart Grand Rounds, Krishna Tummalapalli, MD, FACC, FSCAI, explains primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) in the elderly. Dr. Tummalapalli describes the importance of performing pPCI in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and ischemic symptoms, and also reviews clinical therapies and research trials.
Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Recall indications for coronary stenting for STEMI patients and identify elderly patients for invasive procedures
- Recognize non-STEMI as a serious, potentially life-threatening condition among elderly and describe significant atypical features at the time of acute coronary syndromes
- Explain research of elderly patients in ongoing clinical and interventional trials
