UPMC Liver Transplant Program Welcomes Hepatology Transplant Experts Kiran Bambha, MD, and Scott Biggins, MD

We’re excited to welcome Kiran Bambha, MD, and Scott Biggins, MD, two recognized liver transplant experts, to the UPMC Liver Transplant Program.

Since Thomas E. Starzl, MD, PhD, performed the world’s first liver transplant in 1967, experts at the UPMC Liver Transplant Program have continued his legacy, performing close to 8,000 liver transplants to date, developing novel therapies, and significantly advancing liver disease research. Our team has expanded over the years to include a multidisciplinary group of transplant surgeons, hepatologists, and nurse coordinators, nutritionists, champion ambassadors, and more leaders in the field. Dr. Bambha and Dr. Biggins have comprehensive experience treating the continuum of liver diseases and gastrointestinal conditions and are both award-winning physician-scientists.

Prior to her appointment at UPMC, Dr. Bambha held several leadership positions including medical director of Living Donor Liver Transplant at the University of Washington Medical Center, and director of the Cholangiocarcinoma Transplant Program at the University of Washington. She’s received numerous awards from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), American Society of Transplantation, and other organizations. She received her medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine, followed by an internal medicine residency at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. She then completed a fellowship and T32 Training Grant in gastroenterology and hepatology from Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, and a fellowship in hepatology and liver transplantation from University of California, San Francisco. She is certified in internal medicine, gastroenterology and hepatology, and transplant hepatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Biggins will serve as medical director of the UPMC Liver Transplant Program. He has held various hospital and academic roles, including chief of Hepatology at the University of Washington and co-director of the Liver Transplant Program at University of Washington Medical Center. He’s received over a dozen honors from the American Liver Foundation, American Gastroenterological Association, and other organizations, and has been heavily involved in shaping local, regional, and national liver allocation policy. Dr. Biggins received his medical degree from the University of Sothern California, followed by a residency at Oregon Health & Sciences University and a gastroenterology fellowship at University of California, San Francisco. He is certified in internal medicine, gastroenterology, and transplant hepatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
