UPMC Digestive Disorders Center

UPMC is one of the nation's leaders in treating digestive disorders. Our physicians take a personalized and integrated approach to diagnosing and treating digestive disorders, so patients are spared the unnecessary pain and expense of an outdated trial and error, one-size-fits-all approach.

The Latest Treatments

Physicians at the UPMC Digestive Disorders Center diagnose and treat the most complicated digestive disorders, including:

Minimally invasive techniques are emphasized, including the latest in endoscopic therapies and laparoscopic surgeries.

Additionally, the UPMC Department of Dermatology opened the nation’s first gastrointestinal dermatology clinic to provide coordinated care to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and celiac disease patients with associated dermatologic conditions. Approximately 30 percent of people living with a gastrointestinal (GI) condition, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or Celiac disease, have a related dermatologic disease. The Gastrointestinal Dermatology clinic is dedicated to providing patients with comprehensive, multidisciplinary care and treatment that can provide patients improved quality of life.

Clinical Research and Teaching

UPMC's Digestive Disorders Center stresses an intimate interaction between discovery, teaching, and clinical care. Our researchers stress translational advancements, focusing their investigations on real clinical problems and guiding their projects with invaluable feedback from clinicians and patients.

Physicians at the UPMC Digestive Disorders Center are conducting cutting edge research to develop new cell screening procedures and blood tests to predict early stages of colon cancer, diagnose pancreatic cancer, and identify genes that cause pancreatitis and Crohn's disease.  New treatment approaches are available for patients with hepatitis C, Crohn’s disease, and pancreatitis, as well as other digestive diseases.

World renowned hepatologists at the UPMC Center for Liver Diseases provide cutting-edge therapies for all disorders of the liver. The Center is a convenient point of access to a full range of comprehensive care focusing on the management and treatment of a variety of liver diseases.

The new UPMC Visceral Inflammation Pain (VIP) Center is addressing the most challenging chronic pain problems associated with IBD, irritable bowel syndrome, visceral hypersensitivity, and other digestive pain issues.

In addition, UPMC physicians participate in local, national, and international clinical trials to find new treatment options for digestive disorders. Four main areas of research include:

  • Seek personalized approaches to all patient needs and translate basic scientific finding into actual treatments
  • Address inflammation and immunological disease symptoms
  • With international collaboration, search for genetic links to improve diagnosis and treatment
  • Explore the brain-GI connection to address pain and related functional bowel disorders
