In this edition of Gastroenterology Digest, Stephen J.D. O’Keefe, MD, discusses dietary prevention of colon cancer and other noncommunicable westernized diseases, and David Levinthal, MD, discusses cyclic vomiting syndrome in addition to the recognition and guidelines for treatment. Andres Duarte-Rojo, MD, PhD, discusses clinical utility of non-invasive liver disease assessment. Randall E. Brand, MD, Beth Dudley Yurkovich, MS, MPH, CGC, and Eve Karloski, MS, CGC, discuss pancreatic cancer surveillance, and Nelson Valentin, MD, explores what happens when the liver fails. 

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe to patients the benefits of consuming at least 50 grams of fiber per day, which should reduce their risk of colon cancer and many other diseases.
  • Recognize the most common symptoms of cyclic vomiting syndrome in adults.
  • Implement their diagnostic skills for the assessment of liver fibrosis, such that non-invasive liver disease assessments are considered more frequently and liver biopsy is used more selectively.
  • Identify patient and family characteristics that indicate a patient would likely benefit from an assessment of pancreatic cancer risk and explain what surveillance for pancreatic cancer would entail, if indicated, after the risk assessment.
