In this fall edition of Update in Endocrinology, Alison B. Kohan, PhD, discusses intestinal lipoproteins in normal metabolism and disease and the ongoing research the Kohan Lab is conducting on this topic.

Jagdeesh Ullal, MD, MS, FACE, FACP, ECNU and Kara S. Hughan, MD, directors of the UPMC Adult and Pediatric Endocrinology Cystic Fibrosis Centers, respectively, discuss the multidisciplinary aspects of the Centers and how the care of patients with cystic fibrosis has evolved over the last 70 years.

Divya Sistla, MD, and her mentor, Hussain Mahmud, MD, present a clinical case discussing an unusual case of medullary thyroid cancer.

Lauren Willard, DO, and Archana Bandi, MD, discuss how the Endocrinology Divisions at UPMC and the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System expanded their current telemedicine practices to create continuity of care for patients during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Educational Objectives 

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to: 

  • Recall the first gene identified to cause Medullary Thyroid Cancer
  • Explain the mechanism of CFTR modulator therapy
  • Identify the small intestine as an active secretion organ and recognize that small intestinal enterocytes synthesize and secrete triglyceride-rich lipoproteins in response to dietary triglyceride
