The Translational Research Laboratories in Urogynecology Team at the Magee-Womens Research Institute, led by Pamela A. Moalli, MD, PhD, and Steven Abramowitch, PhD, have been awarded the 2026 ASME Edward Grood Interdisciplinary Team Science Award in Bioengineering “for advancing interdisciplinary bioengineering science that unites biomechanics, computation, and clinical translation to elucidate urogynecologic mesh complications and engineer auxetic elastomeric devices; and for significant advancements in pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence surgical outcomes for millions of women worldwide.”
The ASME Edward Grood Interdisciplinary Team Science Award in Bioengineering, established in 2022, recognizes a team of scientists and engineers who have collaboratively carried out impactful interdisciplinary science and engineering research in the bioengineering field.
Pamela Moalli, MD, PhD, serves as division director for Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery at UPMC and interim executive director, Magee-Womens Research Institute. Her research focuses on the development of novel biomaterials for use in pelvic reconstructive surgeries, defining and reducing maternal birth injury, and vaginal biofabrication.
Steven Abramowitch, PhD, is a bioengineer who serves as an investigator for the Magee-Womens Research Institute. He is also an associate professor in the Bioengineering Department of the University of Pittsburgh Clinical and Translational Science Institute. Dr. Abramowitch’s research interests include reproductive medicine, urogynecology, and biomedical engineering.
This award recognizes Dr. Moalli, Dr. Abramowitch, and their team’s dedication to the improvement of surgical outcomes for women and overall advancement of women’s health care.
