The UPMC Heart Transplant Program is one of the most recognized and experienced centers in the nation. Our experts provide life-saving care to patients suffering from severe heart disease and heart failure, including those who have been deemed high risk and were turned down for a transplant at another center. Our transplant teams across UPMC closely collaborate to provide expert care for patients requiring a multi-organ transplant.

Watch the video below to learn more about how our multidisciplinary team of experts works together to provide world class care and a second chance at life for patients living with heart disease. We work closely with patients in every step of the transplant journey to achieve the best possible outcomes and help them live a healthy life with their new heart.

Our team’s continued dedication to innovation has led to groundbreaking milestones throughout the years:

  • As reported by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) in Jan. 2026, UPMC is tied for the national leader and the top program in Pennsylvania in 90-day survival rates following heart transplantation.
  • UPMC is one of the top programs in the nation for patient survival rates at 30 days and one-year post-transplant, according to data from the SRTR.
  • The heart transplant team takes on some of the most complex cases, including patients in need of a multi-organ transplant or requiring a bloodless transplant.
  • UPMC was the first medical center to discharge a patient with a ventricular assist device (VAD) in 1990. Since then, UPMC doctors have implanted more than 1,300 VADs, improved existing VADs, and designed new ones to increase survival rates and enhance the lives of those waiting for a transplant.
