Cystic Fibrosis Researcher Traci M. Kazmerski, MD, MS, Receives Clinical Research Scholars Program Award from Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine faculty, Traci M. Kazmerski, MD, MS, is the recipient of a Clinical Research Scholars Program (CRSP) Award from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Dr. Kazmerski is a pediatric pulmonologist at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation CRSP enables outstanding early-career pediatricians and internists to develop the necessary clinical research capabilities to become independent investigators who formulate and lead multicenter, clinical research studies in cystic fibrosis (CF).
Dr. Kazmerski is the sole 2021 CRSP recipient. She is co-mentored in her research by Elizabeth Miller, MD, PhD, FSAHM, the Edmund R. McCluskey Chair in Pediatric Medical Education at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Division Director of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine, and Joseph M. Pilewski, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine, where he serves as associate division chief and co-director the Adult CF program at the Antonio J. and Janet Palumbo Cystic Fibrosis Center at UPMC Children’s.
Dr. Kazmerski's primary CRSP project seeks to determine the health impact of parenthood on people with CF. As survival improves and more people with CF consider parenthood, a greater understanding of its effects is required to inform reproductive decisions and better support those who become parents.
Dr. Kazmerski’s study team is planning the first, large-scale investigation of how becoming a parent interplays with having a chronic disease, such as CF. The CRSP training and support will enhance Dr. Kazmerski’s ability to conduct multicenter clinical studies to better understand and effectively meet the needs of people with CF as they live longer and healthier lives.
