Best Pediatrics Abstract Award Goes to Cassandra Formeck, MD, at AKI & CRRT 2023 Meeting

April 5, 2023

The Division of Pediatric Nephrology at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh congratulates Cassandra Formeck, MD, MS, assistant professor of Pediatrics, for receiving the 4th Steven R. Alexander Award for Best Pediatric Abstract at the 28th International Conference on Advances in Critical Care Nephrology (AKI & CRRT 2023), which was held March 29-April 1, 2023 in San Diego, California.

Dr. Formeck’s abstract was selected from more than 100 submissions at this year’s conference.

Dr. Formeck’s research abstract deal with the long-term infectious complications after hospital discharge in patients who experience a non-septic acute kidney injury while admitted to the pediatric and cardiac intensive care units.

The research found that “AKI may lead to sustained immunomodulatory effects placing critically ill children at heightened risk for infection following hospital discharge.”

This study is a continuation of Dr. Formeck’s work with this line of investigation. Her most recent publication on the subject occurred in December 2022 in the journal Kidney360.
