A New Hybrid Operating Room Opens at UPMC East

April 10, 2023

In March 2023, UPMC East unveiled a new hybrid room that combines the advanced tools and equipment of a catheterization lab and an operating room. This newly renovated space will be home to a range of vascular services and will provide the opportunity for patients to receive innovative care closer to home.

“The new hybrid room at UPMC East allows us to offer advanced, minimally invasive procedures in Monroeville to our patients,” says Catherine Go, MD, a vascular surgeon at the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute. “We’re able to offer both inpatient and outpatient treatment for a larger scope of vascular conditions.”

Dr. Go sees patients at UPMC East, UPMC Presbyterian, UPMC Shadyside, UPMC McKeesport, UPMC Mercy, UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, UPMC St. Margaret, and UPMC Passavant. Dr. Go, along with vascular surgeons Michel Makaroun, MD, and Fanny Alie-Cusson, MD, utilize this new room for both inpatient and outpatient procedures, including transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR) and endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR).

New services offered at the hybrid room include treatment for:

  • Acute and chronic deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Limb ischemia
  • Leg wounds
  • Aortic aneurysm
  • Stroke/carotid stenosis
  • Dialysis access maintenance and salvage
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)

The new hybrid room at UPMC East will improve patient access and convenience. Select procedures that previously required travel to UPMC Presbyterian can now be performed by the hybrid staff at UPMC East in Monroeville, reducing wait times and travel for the patient.

The UPMC Heart and Vascular team will also see patients at their Monroeville office located on Oxford Drive for follow-up care to monitor their condition. Our experts remain at the forefront of utilizing advanced, minimally invasive therapies to treat patients. The new hybrid room at UPMC East will allow patients to receive innovative treatment from leading vascular surgeons at a location that’s close to home.
