In April 2025, the Van Andel Institute (VAI) announced that J. Timothy Greenamyre, MD, PhD, a neurologist and director at the University of Pittsburgh’s Institute of Neurodegenerative Diseases, is the recipient of the prestigious 2025 Jay Van Andel Award for Outstanding Achievement in Parkinson’s Disease Research.
Dr. Greenamyre’s groundbreaking work explores how genetic factors and environmental exposures interact to trigger and worsen Parkinson’s disease. His studies have especially focused on mitochondrial dysfunction and the activation of genes like LRRK2, contributing key insights into disease mechanisms.
Traditionally awarded in recognition of exceptional contributions to Parkinson’s research, the Jay Van Andel Award honors the memory of VAI co‑founder Jay Van Andel, who lived with the disease for ten years before his passing in 2004.
Dr. Greenamyre will receive the award and deliver the keynote lecture at VAI’s Grand Challenges in Parkinson’s Disease symposium, scheduled for September 9–10, 2025. This high-profile event will also feature 20 other expert speakers, poster sessions, and advocacy discussions, with an emphasis this year on the endolysosomal pathway’s role in Parkinson’s development.
Congratulations, Dr. Greenamyre!
