The Heart Institute at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh recently launched a new fetal cardiology clinic at UPMC Chautauqua. Pediatric cardiologist Megan McGreevy, MD, will see patients at the clinic to provide fetal echocardiography services. UPMC Chautauqua is now the first hospital in the region to offer this service to expecting mothers.

A fetal echocardiogram is a specialized ultrasound test used to scan fetal hearts for abnormalities, typically between weeks 18 to 24 of pregnancy. Fetal echocardiograms may be recommended in the following cases:

  • Family history of congenital heart disease.
  • Another child was born with a heart defect.
  • Chromosomal or genetic abnormality found in the fetus.
  • Diagnosis of diabetes, phenylketonuria, or a connective tissue disease in expectant mother.
  • Expectant mother had rubella during pregnancy.
  • Expectant mother has taken alcohol, drugs, or certain medications that cause congenital heart defects, such as anti-seizure and acne medications, during pregnancy.

“By offering fetal echocardiography services at UPMC Chautauqua, we are able to identify and diagnose congenital heart defects before birth, allowing for improved planning and treatment of the baby,” says Dr. McGreevy. “This new clinic is providing an incredibly important service to expectant mothers in western New York.”

The Heart Institute at UPMC Children’s is excited to expand fetal cardiology services and improve access to care for expectant mothers in UPMC Chautauqua’s surrounding communities.
