A postoperative device clinic is open in the UPMC Outpatient Center located at 416 South Main St. in Mansfield. At this location, experts from the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute meet with patients and focus on monitoring, managing, and optimizing their heart rhythm devices, such as pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronization therapy devices.

“Our care for our patients extends beyond the operating table,” explains Chase Contino, MD, a cardiac electrophysiologist with the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute. “We continue to see them in the weeks and months following surgery to make sure their devices are functioning properly and performing as they should. And if adjustments need to be made, we can change the settings to support each patient’s heart health.”

Dr. Contino says the key benefits of the new clinic include:

  • Continuous monitoring of heart rhythm devices.
  • Early detection of device or heart rhythm concerns.
  • Personalized adjustments to improve heart function.
  • Reduced need for hospital visits through remote monitoring.
  • Seamless coordination with cardiology care teams.

“This expansion reflects our continued commitment to growing heart and vascular services across North Central Pennsylvania,” says Luke Klingler, director of the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute in North Central Pa. “We’re focused on delivering high-quality, coordinated care in the communities we serve.”

Dr. Contino adds that in addition to devices being monitored during in-person visits to the new clinic, he and his colleagues can detect potential issues remotely as well.

“Our goal is to provide patients with peace of mind knowing their device is being continuously managed by a dedicated team.”
