UPMC Williamsport renovated IR Lab.As part of UPMC’s commitment to provide cutting-edge health care, UPMC Williamsport has completed a highly anticipated renovation and relocation of its interventional radiology (IR) labs.

The previous labs had served the region for many years but had reached a point where a large-scale expansion was necessary, not only to accommodate new, advanced technologies and equipment but also to improve patient flow and efficiency.

The new IR labs are conveniently located beside the operating rooms, anesthesia, and same-day surgery units. With the labs now located closer to surgical and recovery services, patient movement becomes significantly simpler and safer.

“We can go right from same-day surgery to IR to recovery without crisscrossing the hospital,” explains Deb London, MSN, unit director for the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute in North Central Pa. “It improves safety and efficiency while also providing a better experience for patients and staff.”

IR uses imaging techniques such as x-rays, MRIs, CT scans, and ultrasounds to diagnose and treat a wide range of diseases, offering less-invasive options when compared to open surgeries.

Conditions that can be treated with IR include:

For patients and the community, this renovation means:

  • Shorter wait times
  • Expanding in-house testing
  • Recruiting the next generation of lab experts

Each of the two new labs features next-generation fluoroscopy systems capable of real-time vessel imaging.

“We can see exactly where a blockage is, guide our wire, place a balloon or stent, and watch it open, all via a live stream,” Deb says. “A project like this has a significant impact on the quality of patient care. We’ll be able to do so much more.”
