The Magee-Womens team proudly spotlighted its commitment to maternal health as lead doulas from The Birth Circle program Jeaonna Hodges, CD(DONA), CPD, CLC, C-CMMHS, and Brandy Gentry, SBD, CLC, presented at the Shades of Blue Project’s Black Maternal Health Summit.

Their workshop, titled "Doulas as First Responders in a Maternal Mental Health Crisis," explored the essential role doulas play in identifying and addressing maternal mental health concerns, particularly within the Black birthing community. With a focus on culturally competent care, Jeaonna and Brandy outlined how doulas serve as trusted advocates and emotional anchors during some of the most vulnerable moments in a birthing person’s life.

The interactive session engaged attendees in scenario-based roleplay, demonstrating how doulas can create safe, judgment-free spaces, connect clients to mental health resources, and serve as liaisons within the health care system. Jeaonna and Brandy also emphasized the importance of specialized training for doulas to recognize early signs of distress and respond effectively.

Their presentation was a testament to the growing momentum behind community-driven, culturally responsive solutions in maternal health care and the indispensable role of doulas in promoting holistic care.
