Michael C. Munin, MD, Receives American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine 2022 Scientific Impact Award

Michael C. Munin, MD, professor, UPMC Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, was awarded one of the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine’s (AANEM) 2022 Scientific Impact Awards, for his work as the senior author on “Reliability and Validity of the Modified Heckmatt Scale in Evaluating Muscle Changes With Ultrasound in Spasticity,” published in Archives of Rehabilitation Research and Clinical Translation.

AANEM’s Scientific Impact Award recognizes mid-career members for serving as a first author, second author, or last (senior) author on a published paper in a national or international peer-reviewed, indexed journal within the past two years. Dr. Munin will be recognized at the upcoming AANEM Annual Meeting in Nashville, September 21-24.

Dr. Munin is the EMG co-medical director at UPMC Presbyterian and is a professor and vice chair for strategic planning and program development for PM&R at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, with secondary appointments in the departments of rehabilitation science and technology and otolaryngology. He also directs the spasticity and prosthetic rehabilitation clinics at UPMC Presbyterian.

His clinical interests include ultrasound localization for neurolytic procedures, muscle spasticity, prosthetic rehabilitation, vocal cord paralysis, botulinum toxins, and electromyography. Dr. Munin is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine. Dr. Munin also has authored over 100 peer reviewed scientific papers and abstracts and multiple medical book chapters. He is frequently invited to speak at peer seminars and lectureships related to research.
