Marty Sellers, MD, MPH, Joins UPMC Liver Transplant Program

Image of Marty Sellers, MD, MPH.The UPMC Liver Transplant team is proud to welcome Marty Sellers, MD, MPH, to our expert team of liver transplant surgeons. Dr. Sellers has decades of experience in transplant surgery and organ recovery. He most recently served as medical director and lead recovery surgeon at the Gift of Life Donor Program, the organ procurement organization serving eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and Delaware.

Clinical, Research, and Academic Experience

Dr. Sellers earned his medical degree at the University of Alabama School of Medicine, followed by an internship and residency in general surgery and a research fellowship in surgical oncology. He then completed a clinical fellowship in abdominal transplant surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He earned a Master of Public Health, specializing in health care outcomes, at Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University.

Dr. Sellers has held academic and surgical faculty roles at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and the Emory University School of Medicine. He also served as medical advisor for the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations from 2021 through 2023.

As a member of multiple Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network/United Network of Organ Sharing (OPTN/UNOS) and American Society of Transplantation (AST) committees and subcommittees, Dr. Sellers has helped to develop national policies to optimize organ utilization and enhance transplant candidate, recipient, and donor safety. He has delivered presentations about innovations in deceased-donor organ recovery and advanced liver preservation strategies, including normothermic regional perfusion (NRP), at multiple national and international conferences.

Dr. Sellers is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, the American Society of Transplantation, and the International Society for Organ Donation Professionals.

Through media appearances in national, regional, and local media outlets, Dr. Sellers has educated communities about solid organ transplantation and organ donation policies and raised awareness about racial inequities in chronic kidney and liver disease care, transplant access, and organ donation.
