Journal Issue Dedicated to Freddie Fu, MD

August 23, 2022

The late Freddie Fu, MD, was honored and remembered in the June 2022 issue of Operative Techniques in Orthopaedics. In this special issue – titled “Tribute to Freddie Fu, MD” – physicians and contributors to the journal celebrated their mentor, colleague, and friend through a compilation of articles on topics for which Dr. Fu had a great passion.

In the journal’s introduction, UPMC Orthopaedic Care physician Bryson Lesniak, MD, who served as the guest editor of the issue, said, “It is an honor to be the editor for a special issue of Operative Techniques in Orthopaedics – a tribute to the late, great former editor-in-chief of this journal, Freddie H. Fu. So many words can be used to describe Freddie, and therefore it is a difficult task to summarize what he meant to me and so many others in the field of orthopaedics. From a professional standpoint, Freddie was a visionary, a thought leader, and a teacher. With that in mind, we felt it important to highlight several orthopaedic topics that were near and dear to Freddie’s heart.”

The issue included seven articles, authored by physicians who each had a connection to Dr. Fu:

“Words on a page cannot describe what Freddie meant to us as a mentor, colleague, and friend,” Dr. Lesniak said in his letter. “More importantly, by revisiting some of his passions and his ideals we can remind ourselves of his example of being a leader, a visionary, and an iconoclast. And perhaps, we can keep his memory alive by doing our level best to follow our own passions and ideals to keep driving our field of orthopaedics into the future.”
