We are proud to share that Johannes Bonatti, MD, recently received The Society of Robotic Surgery (SRS) Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual SRS meeting in Strasbourg, France. Dr. Bonatti is the director of Robotic Cardiac Surgery at the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute and a professor of cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.

Upon receiving this award, Dr. Bonatti was commended by SRS President Ghulam Abbas for his persistence over the years since his start in robotic cardiac surgery in 2001. With 25 years of experience, he has established himself as an internationally recognized expert offering the full spectrum of robotic cardiac procedures.

Dr. Bonatti has developed advanced versions of robotic totally endoscopic coronary artery bypass grafting (TECAB), including the world’s first successful quadruple robotic TECAB procedure and the first simultaneous hybrid coronary intervention combining TECAB and stenting of coronary arteries. In addition to his surgical achievements, he has been instrumental in training robotic cardiac surgery teams around the world.

With the expertise of Dr. Bonatti and his team, UPMC has been awarded the highest possible rating of three stars for coronary artery bypass grafting and we are one of only a few centers offering TECAB. With robotic cardiac surgery, we are providing life-changing medicine, developing new techniques, and training the heart surgeons of the future. These advancements will lead to continued improvement in cardiac surgical procedures and quicker recovery and return to life for patients treated at UPMC.
