Daniel G and Carole L Kamin Tower at UPMC Presbyterian Slated for Opening in January 2027

UPMC will open the Daniel G and Carole L Kamin Tower at UPMC Presbyterian on January 24, 2027 and take care to new heights. Conceived in response to growing demands for UPMC’s expertise and the need to modernize the UPMC Presbyterian campus, Kamin Tower is a 17-story, 900,000 square-foot inpatient facility that unites UPMC’s world-renowned clinical expertise for a full range of medical and surgical services, including acclaimed programs in transplant, heart and vascular, and neurological care.

Kamin Tower incorporates thoughtful design elements to create an environment that fosters healing, eases the delivery of care, and engages the community. For patients and their families, the tower offers a host of in-room and campus-wide amenities, including 636 private rooms, the latest bedside technology for information, education, and entertainment, and dedicated spaces for family respite. Innovative videoconferencing capabilities enable loved ones to attend virtual consultations with a patient’s physician if they’re unable to be present at the tower, maintaining connectivity and support.

Mixed-acuity floors keep patients in the same location as they progress through their stay –from arrival to critical care to less intense levels of care prior to discharge – all within the same floor treating individuals with similar conditions or in disease-specific units. And to reduce congestion in patient rooms during daily rounds, each floor features designated areas called holodecks that allow students, residents, and fellows to participate in virtual rounds through videoconferencing.

Many elements of the Kamin Tower benefit not only patients and visitors, but staff as well, allowing them to deliver the care for which UPMC is renowned more seamlessly. Individual workstations – rather than traditional nurse stations – are present outside of patient rooms, with touch-down spaces nearby for physicians, pharmacists, and other members of the care team. One neurosurgery floor features an imaging suite to reduce the need for patient transport, and among the 12 new operating rooms, a moveable MRI – which travels via a ceiling-mounted rail from an adjacent diagnostic room to the operating room – allows patients to remain on the operating table during imaging should that need arise during their surgery.

In addition to serving as a place for exceptional care, Kamin Tower was designed to engage the community, provide opportunities for economic growth, and promote overall wellness. The Grove, a collection of resources across the tower’s first four levels, offers a host of amenities to meet these needs, including a full-service restaurant, coffee shop, and large-scale café for made-to-order and grab-and-go meals and snacks; a market for grocery staples; dedicated spaces for pop-up retail and entertainment by local artists and vendors; and a spirituality center with a multifaith chapel and private room for quiet reflection. A conference center is available both for community health education classes and overall community needs, so local groups will be encouraged to utilize these spaces for meetings and events.

While surgeries are slated to begin in the new operating rooms in late 2026, the full patient move will take place in one day, on Sunday, January 24, 2027.
