UPMC Welcomes Three New Heart Care Experts in Southwest Pa.

Managing and treating patients with cardiovascular disease requires a comprehensive team approach. At UPMC, our team of heart care experts are dedicated to offering personalized care and treatment options to patients diagnosed with a range of heart conditions.
We are pleased to announce that our team of cardiology experts in Southwest Pa. is expanding to include the below providers who share this same dedication to patient-centered care.
Sonya John, MD
Sonya John, MD, earned her medical degree at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed her residency and fellowship at UC San Diego. Dr. John joins a highly-skilled team of cardiologists at the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute and will continue to fulfill the team’s mission of enhancing patient care.
Dr. John sees patients at UPMC East and UPMC McKeesport.
Andreas Kyvernitakis, MD
Andreas Kyvernitakis, MD, joins the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute with expertise in cardio-oncology. Dr. Kyvernitakis completed his residency and fellowship at Allegheny Health Network after earning his medical degree at the University of Crete in Greece.
Dr. Kyvernitakis sees patients at UPMC Shadyside and the UPMC Outpatient Center: West Mifflin.
Henrietta Afari, MD
Henrietta Afari, MD, specializes in cardiovascular medicine and is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She joins the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute after earning her medical degree at Harvard Medical School, followed by a residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, and fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
In addition to her cardiovascular expertise, Dr. Afari takes a special interest in global health and women’s health. During her training, she spent time providing clinical care and conducting research in Ghana and Uganda. Keeping global health issues in mind, Dr. Afari hopes to support women’s cardiovascular health, with a focus on heart disease in pregnant women.
Dr. Afari sees patients at UPMC Mercy and UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital.
