UPMC is proud to announce the addition of Raul Caso, MD, MSCI, to our team of thoracic surgery experts.

Dr. Caso has extensive clinical and research experience relating to cardiothoracic surgery. His expertise will contribute to the continuation of UPMC’s legacy of life-saving thoracic surgical care.

After receiving his medical degree from the New York University Grossman School of Medicine, Dr. Caso completed a residency in general surgery at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. During his surgical residency, Dr. Caso performed two years of dedicated thoracic oncology research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Following his residency, Dr. Caso completed a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. He received additional training in esophageal and benign foregut surgery at the Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Caso is board-certified in general surgery and has published more than 60 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. His research interests include surgical clinical outcomes of thoracic surgery patients and the genomics of lung cancer. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

Dr. Caso will be seeing patients at UPMC Shadyside and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center.

With the addition of Dr. Caso, the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute will continue to provide highly specialized care for patients with chest diseases and conditions. As one of the first medical centers in the country to perform minimally invasive surgery for esophageal and lung cancers, UPMC is a national leader in treating thoracic conditions.

Additionally, UPMC is a national leader in complex minimally invasive surgery for thoracic surgery for disease of the lung, esophagus and mediastinum. These minimal access approaches significantly enhance recovery and reduce perioperative risk.
