Gavin Arteel, PhD, Named Associate Vice Chair for Faculty Advancement at University of Pittsburgh Department of Medicine

The University of Pittsburgh Department of Medicine is proud to announce the appointment of Gavin E. Arteel, PhD, as Associate Vice Chair for Faculty Advancement, effective July 1, 2025.

Dr. Arteel joined the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine faculty as a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition in 2018. He received his PhD in Toxicology at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill in 1997 and subsequently conducted postdoctoral research through the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship in Germany and at UNC’s Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies.

Prior to joining Pitt, Dr. Arteel spent 16 years at the University of Louisville in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, where he was named Distinguished University Scholar in 2010 and served as Vice Chair for Research. His research program focuses on extracellular matrix remodeling in liver disease. Currently, he is developing biomarkers for the clinical detection and monitoring of liver disease, as well as computational tools to identify liver disease mechanisms.

Dr. Arteel has served as Associate Chief for Basic Science since 2018 and as the Co-Director of the EMERGE Program in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition since its inception. Dr. Arteel also directs the Pilot and Feasibility Core of the Pittsburgh Liver Research Center. He has a long track record of NIH funding and has published extensively in high-impact journals. In addition to his research excellence, Dr. Arteel is very passionate about training the next generation and has demonstrated a strong commitment to education and mentoring. With a focus on guiding faculty along their career paths, he has been instrumental in helping faculty navigate the promotion process and secure independent funding.

In this new role, Dr. Arteel will oversee promotion and tenure processes, serve as a key resource for faculty and leaders, and help strengthen advancement across the department.
