The 2025 Science of Medicine Conference: Developing the Next Generation of Physician Scientists

On September 18 and 19, UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh Department of Medicine hosted The Science of Medicine: Developing the Next Generation of Physician Scientists conference.

This event brought together physicians, fellows-in-training, physician scientists, and numerous other healthcare and academic professionals with a major clinical or research interest in medicine to foster interaction and collaboration. It was attended by more than 170 medical professionals across numerous specialties and received a total of 53 abstract submissions. There were 12 presentations selected from these abstract submissions and a total of 12 exhibitors during the event.

Throughout the conference, experts from leading academic institutions presented on various topics to demonstrate how scientific advances at the bench are being applied to bedside medicine and vice versa, including the critical role of physician-scientists in this process. Attendees were given the opportunity to view presentations and participate in workshops that:

  • Demonstrated translation of scientific advances to clinical medicine and the role of physician-scientists in this process.
  • Recognized the new role of artificial intelligence in science and medical care.
  • Provided concrete actions that trainees and physician-scientists can take to strengthen their scientific careers and impact.
