Raul G. Nogueira, MD, FAHA, FSVIN, Receives World Stroke Organization's Presidential Award

Congratulations to Raul G. Nogueira, MD, FAHA, FSVIN, division chief of cerebrovascular medicine, director of the UPMC Stroke Institute, and endowed professor of neurology and neurosurgery, who received the World Stroke Organization's 2023 Presidential Award at the World Stroke Congress in Toronto, Ontario, for his tremendous contributions to stroke thrombectomy.

Dr. Nogueira is widely known for his work in acute stroke diagnosis and treatments, with an emphasis on optimizing endovascular stroke treatments. He has been a leader in the revolution of treating acute stroke with mechanical thrombectomy.

Dr. Nogueira’s clinical and research interests focus on the treatment of cerebrovascular diseases. He is a Past President of the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology and the former Editor-In-Chief of the Interventional Neurology journal. He has had a global leadership role in many of the landmark stroke thrombectomy trials. He has published close to 450 peer-reviewed manuscripts including first or senior author papers in the NEJM, Lancet, and JAMA. He is a world-renowned researcher having lectured in 25 countries.

Dr. Nogueira received his medical degree at Federal University of Ceara, followed by a residency and fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
