Volker Musahl, MD, Named Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania Endowed Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery

On November 8, 2019, Volker Musahl, MD, professor of orthopaedic surgery, chief of the Division of Sports Medicine, medical director of the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, and program director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program was awarded the Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania Endowed Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Musahl also is co-head team physician for the varsity football program at the University of Pittsburgh. After earning his medical degree at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg in Germany, Dr. Musahl completed his residency at UPMC and orthopaedic surgery fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery Sports Medicine and Shoulder in New York. Dr. Musahl’s research interests include knee and shoulder biomechanics, and he co-directs the Orthopaedic Robotics Laboratory with Richard Debski, PhD. Dr. Musahl is primary or co-investigator on a number of National Institutes of Health- and Department of Defense-funded investigations and clinical trials examining, among other things, multiple ligament knee injuries and rotator cuff tears. In his clinical practice, Dr. Musahl provides comprehensive care for patients of all ages with injuries to the knee, shoulder, and elbow.
