Profile:

Dr. Boujoukos was born in the north shore area of Boston. He obtained both his undergraduate and medical degrees at Tufts University. He stayed in Boston 3 more years and completed an Internal Medicine residency at New England Medical Center. Dr. Boujoukos then moved to Bethesda and completed a 3 year clinical/research fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the NIH. In 1992, he joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh as an intensivist in the Department of Anesthesiology/Critical Care Medicine. He is the Medical Director of the 22-bed Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit at UPMC Oakland, where he works clinically. In this role, he has experience in the management of hundreds of lung transplant recipients, a similar number of ECMO, heart transplant and ventricular assist device recipients and thousands of patients recovering from coronary and valve surgery. His interests and publications include mechanisms of sepsis, lung transplantation, nosocomial infections, as well as postoperative management of cardiothoracic surgical patients.

Dr. Boujoukos has been named Outstanding Clinician on multiple occasions by Multidisciplinary Critical Care Training Program and recently named in “Best Doctors in America.” He is currently Vice Chair of Clinical Operations in the Adult Division of the Department of Critical Care and Professor of Critical Care Medicine.
