Profile:

Dr. Chopra is a Professor of Medicine whose research interests focus on the cholestatic liver diseases primary sclerosing cholangitis and primary biliary cirrhosis. He has been involved in collaborative research projects with the Starzl Transplant Institute and the Liver Cancer Center, and has served as co-investigator on a number of multicenter trials investigating novel therapies and approaches to the management of viral hepatitis. His research work has culminated in 50 scientific presentations at national and international conferences.

He was a co-investigator on the following NIH-funded research studies:

  • PSC Resource of Genetic Risk
  • Environment and Synergy Studies (PROGRESS) – Principal Investigator – Dr. K Lazaridis, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine
  • A Preliminary Study of the Efficacy and Safety of Carbamazepine in Severe Liver Disease Due to Alpha-1-Antitrypsin Deficiency (Principal Investigator – Dr. David Perlmutter, Children’s Hospital, Pittsburgh)

With respect to publications, Dr. Chopra has 26 publications in peer-reviewed journals with five articles as first author and ten as senior author. He has contributed as the senior author for four textbook chapters and has a monograph on Hepatic Steatosis on the British Medical Journal (BMJ) Point of Care project.

In recognition of his role as a mentor and his contributions to the Clinical Research Scholars Program (CRSP) of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), he was offered a secondary appointment in Clinical and Translational Science at the University of Pittsburgh in September 2012.

Dr. Chopra is based at the UPMC Center for Liver Diseases within the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition, the Starzl Transplant Institute and the Liver Pancreas Institute. He provides consultative services in Hepatology and Transplant Hepatology at the UPMC Presbyterian/Montefiore Hospitals, UPMC Passavant Hospital, UPMC Shadyside Hospital and the UPMC Magee Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Chopra's clinical interests include the following: evaluation and management of patients with acute and chronic liver disease. These include: abnormal liver function tests; acute liver failure; cirrhosis of the liver; viral hepatitis C; viral hepatitis B; alcoholic and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease; autoimmune hepatitis; primary biliary cirrhosis; primary sclerosing cholangitis; genetic liver disorders - hereditary hemochromatosis; alpha-one antitrypsin deficiency; liver tumors - both benign [hemangioma; adenoma; focal nodular hyperplasia] and malignant [hepatocellular carcinoma]; non cirrhotic portal hypertension - portal venous thrombosis.

Management of complications of cirrhosis of liver [portal hypertension - esophageal varices; gastric varices; ascites; hepatic encephalopathy].

Cardiac Amyloidosis center, member, multidisciplinary team.

He is board-certified in Transplant Hepatology - involved in the evaluation and selection of patients for liver transplantation; managing patients on the liver transplant waitlist; management of patients after liver transplantation.

He is board-certified in Gastroenterolgy who provides gastrointestinal endoscopy services [esophagogastroduodenoscopy; colonoscopy] to his patients.

Dr. Chopra has served in several leadership/administrative roles throughout his clinical career.
