Profile:

Dr. Michel Modo is a Professor in the Department of Radiology at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition, he holds secondary appointments in the Department of Bioengineering, the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, and the Center for Neural Basis of Cognition. Dr. Modo earned his BSc (Honors) in Psychology at Royal Holloway, University of London.  He then achieved first his MSc followed by his PhD in Neurosciences from King’s College London, where he also completed his post-doctoral work in Neuroimaging. He is a fellow of the UK Higher Education Authority (HEA) and the American Society for Neural Therapy and Repair (ASNTR). He is the president of ASNTR for 2017-2018, organizing its 25th anniversary meeting. In 2013, Dr. Modo received the Bernard Sanberg Memorial Award for Brain Repair from ASNTR. Dr. Modo’s research interests include:

  • stroke, Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease
  • cell transplantation and stem cell differentiation
  • implantation of biomaterials for tissue engineering
  • cellular and molecular MR imaging
  • diffusion tensor MR imaging of ex vivo tissue samples

He currently serves on the editorial boards of Brain Research Bulletin, Cell Transplantation, Current Stem Cell Research and Therapy, Scientific Reports, and more.
