Director, Organ Procurement
Dr. Roberto Lopez is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. At the Transplantation Institute, he is also the Director of Organ Procurement. Dr. Lopez received his degree in Biology at Colegio de Bachilleres in Chihuahua, Mexico, and then went on to receive his MD in Surgery and Obstetrics from the University if Monterrey in Monterrey, NL, Mexico. He has held several positions which included Assistant and Associate Professor at the Army Medical Center in Mexico City. Dr. Lopez began his career at the Starzl Transplantation Institute as a Visiting Research Fellow (1995-1997), a Visiting Instructor in Transplant Surgery (1997-2000), a Visiting Instructor in the Artificial Liver Support Program (2000-2003), and a Multiorgan Transplant Fellow (2003-2005).

Dr. Lopez is a journal reviewer for Clinical Transplantation, ASAIO, and Clinics (Brazilian journal). He is an Advisory Board Member for the Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE). In 2006 he was the recipient of the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute “Young Investigator Award.”
