Division of Pediatric Nephrology Fellow Recognized for Top Pediatric Abstract at AKI & CRRT Annual Meeting

April 5, 2024

The Division of Pediatric Nephrology at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh congratulates Lillian Mauroner, DO, for her abstract titled “An Exploration of the Association of Sex and Pubertal Status with AKI and AKD in Critically Ill Children,” which was recognized as the Top Pediatric Abstract at the AKI & CRRT 2024 annual meeting.

The abstract reviewed the role of sex on AKI and AKD development of children in the PICU and found that in post-pubertal patients, female sex was protective in the development of both AKI and AKD.

Dr. Mauroner received the 5th Steven Alexander Top Pediatric Abstract Award. She also received a grant and a plaque and was recognized at the conference awards ceremony.

Dr. Mauroner graduated from Hendrix College in Arkansas with a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology, and then earned her medical degree from William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She subsequently completed a pediatric residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and McGovern Medical School. She is currently a PGY-6 fellow within the Department of Pediatrics.

This is the second year in a row that faculty and fellows from UPMC Children’s Division of Pediatric Nephrology have won the award for Top Pediatric Abstract at the conference. At the 2023 conference, Cassandra Formeck, MD, MS, assistant professor of Pediatrics, received the award for a study on long-term infectious complications after hospital discharge in patients with non-septic AKI.
