The UPMC Kidney Transplant Program at UPMC Harrisburg is proud to announce the addition of transplant surgeon Ann Thompson, DO, to our team. Her expertise will contribute to the continuation of UPMC’s legacy of life-saving kidney transplant care at UPMC Harrisburg.
Dr. Thompson received her medical degree from Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific Northwest in Lebanon, Ore. She then completed an internship in the department of surgery at Hemet Valley Medical Center in Hemet, Calif., followed by a residency and chief residency in general surgery at Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine, Jefferson Health, and Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Stratford, N.J.
Following her residency, Dr. Thompson completed a multi-organ abdominal transplant fellowship at UPMC. After completing her fellowship, Dr. Thompson was appointed an attending abdominal transplant and hepatopancreatobiliary surgeon for liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation, as well as general and robotic surgery at Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden, N.J.
Dr. Thompson is board-certified in general surgery by the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons and is a member of multiple professional societies, including the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, and the American Osteopathic Association. She has drafted numerous peer reviewed articles, including the Kidney Donor Profile Index (KDPI) on the function and longevity of deceased-donor renal transplants, function and longevity of renal grafts from high-KDPI donors, and treatment modalities and long-term outcomes of hepatic hemangioendothelioma in the United States.
The addition of Dr. Thompson enhances the comprehensive, life-saving care the UPMC Kidney Transplant Program at UPMC Harrisburg offers to patients with advanced kidney disease. Our skilled team of transplant nephrologists and surgeons take on some of the most complex cases and provide transplant options to all patients who will benefit. UPMC is home to one of the oldest and largest transplant programs in the country.
We take pride in keeping the lines of communication open with patients, families, and referring physicians regarding status procedures, treatments, and follow-up care. Although transplant is a complex, serious procedure, we maintain a personal, patient-focused approach that takes into consideration the stress and concerns many individuals experience.
