Cardiologists and electrophysiologists at the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute at UPMC Altoona recently performed their 2,000th WATCHMAN™ implant procedure.

The WATCHMAN™ device offers a minimally invasive alternative to long-term blood thinner therapy for patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AFib). During the procedure, a small device is implanted into the left atrial appendage of the heart to prevent the formation of blood clots that can lead to stroke.

“This device allows us to protect our patients from potential strokes and stop the adverse effects of long-term blood thinner use,” says George Jabbour, MD. “At UPMC Altoona, we are incredibly proud of this milestone and look forward to continuing to provide specialized care to each patient that walks through our doors.”

The 2,000th procedure not only represents a significant clinical achievement but also reinforces UPMC Altoona’s position as a leader in cardiovascular care. As the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute expands access to advanced cardiac services, each milestone reflects the dedication to delivering expert, patient-centered care close to home.
