In these presentations from the 2020 Multidisciplinary Thyroid Symposium, Raja Seethala, MD, presents the latest updates in NIFTP thyroid pathology. Barry Schaitkin, MD, describes radioactive Iodine and its effect on salivary glands. Finally, Sally Carty, MD, FACS, explains the clinical utility of thyroid molecular testing.

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to: 

  • Recognize inclusion and exclusion criteria for NIFTP and implement recommended grossing procedures to facilitate diagnosis of NIFTP
  • Implement reporting procedures for NIFTP based on WHO, CAP, and ICD-O-3 updates
  • Describe how radioactive iodine effects the salivary gland and explain the symptoms that occur in patients after radioactive iodine
  • Recall the role of salivary endoscopy in this patient population
  • Identify the three specific types of investigation that sequentially test and vet a new clinical test
  • Explain the clinical utility of molecular testing for thyroid follicular neoplasms managed under the current ATA guidelines
  • Recognize the cost efficacy of thyroid molecular platforms for follicular neoplasm management compared to diagnostic surgery
