UPMC Rehabilitation Institute Patients Honor Staff for Helping them Recover from COVID-19

After 61 days of fighting COVID-19, including four weeks in rehabilitation teaching his body to support him again, 79-year-old Ed Smith was discharged from UPMC St. Margaret met by hundreds of UPMC employees and his entire family cheering him on. "I love them all. Just thank them from the bottom of my heart. I'll never be able to repay them," Ed says of the health care workers who helped him get back on his feet and encouraged him every step of the way.

After 21 days on a ventilator and another month’s worth of rehabilitation to recover from COVID-19, 69-year-old, three-time cancer survivor Fred Szoch is preparing to head home from UPMC St. Margaret. From performing basic exercises to dancing the polka, UPMC Rehabilitation Institute staff found creative ways to help Fred regain strength and get moving again. “I mean, they are so dedicated, caring, I call my nurses and therapists angels,” Fred says.
