Ebstein anomaly (EA) is a rare and complex congenital cardiac malformation that is estimated to occur in less than one percent of all congenital cardiac malformations. While EA primarily affects the right side of the heart, there is data to suggest that the left ventricle (LV) can suffer from intrinsic structural and functional abnormalities, which affect surgical outcomes.
In a recent episode of Pediheart: Pediatric Cardiology Today, Aditi Gupta, MD, speaks on the topic of the left ventricle in Ebstein's anomaly and the work she published with the team at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh’s Da Silva Center for Ebstein’s Anomaly. How often is the LV impaired in patients about to undergo the cone operation for Ebstein's? Why does CMR identify so many more patients with dysfunction in this setting than echocardiography? How commonly is true LV non-compaction observed in this disease? These are amongst the questions reviewed with Dr. Gupta this week.
Dr. Gupta is an advanced imaging fellow at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. She specializes in pediatric cardiology and is board-certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. Dr. Gupta received her medical degree from Maulana Azad Medical College and completed residencies at Maulana Azad Medical College and Lincoln Medical Center, in addition to fellowships at Medanta The Medicity and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
