UPMC: Pioneers in the Treatment of Heart and Vascular Disease

From revolutions in heart transplantation, to introducing minimally invasive procedures like TAVR to the region, to leading novel clinical trials, UPMC experts are at the forefront of cardiovascular disease research and innovation.

Historically, UPMC surgeons including Thomas E. Starzl, MD, revolutionized cardiothoracic surgery through various achievements such as the world’s first heart-liver transplant in 1984 and world’s first heart-liver-kidney transplant in 1989. Our contributions to the field of cardiovascular medicine have only expanded since.

  • 2010: Experts from the Heart Institute at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh perform the world’s first pediatric ventricular assist device (VAD) transport by air for a child in heart failure.
  • 2011: UPMC performs its 3,000th cardiothoracic transplant.
  • 2011: UPMC is the first center in western Pennsylvania to provide transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
  • 2016: UPMC is the first center in western Pennsylvania to offer the WATCHMAN™ device for stroke prevention in select patients with atrial fibrillation.

We’re proud of our accomplishments, but continue to advance care through minimally invasive treatments, robot-assisted surgery, and remote monitoring technology. Our mission is to ensure that every patient who comes through our doors receives world-class, comprehensive, and convenient care.
