Traditionally, this condition has required an invasive cardiac biopsy for diagnosis. Advancing Treatment for Cardiac Amyloidosis

The UPMC Cardiac Amyloidosis Center is one of few in the United States dedicated to the treatment and research of the condition. Our team works to better understand the development and molecular course of amyloid diseases to ultimately develop new therapeutic treatments. The program provides services to:

• Diagnose cardiac amyloidosis using minimally invasive nuclear heart scans and other imaging tests A heart biopsy is used in only a minority of patients.

Comprehensive HCM Treatment

Experts at the UPMC Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center are at the forefront of research and innovation for the treatment of HCM. We actively take part in national education and research endeavors to ensure we are providing the latest diagnostics, medications, and procedures. We are a designated Center of Excellence by the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association.

UPMC offers advanced, minimally invasive cardiac imaging techniques to obtain unparalleled measures of cardiac structure and function, which are critical for accurate diagnosis and personalized decision-making.

• UPMC experts use a state-of-the-art 1.5 Tesla wide-bore MRI system optimized for cardiac imaging as part of our diagnostic evaluation.
• Our echocardiography laboratory supports a specialized protocol to quantify blood flow in the heart during exercise.

Select UPMC experts in electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, heart failure, and cardiac surgery provide additional consultative support. We also collaborate with the UPMC Center for Inherited Heart Diseases to identify the genetic cause of each patient’s HCM and determine the risk of family members developing HCM as well.
