Research Interests

Understanding the unique workings of heart muscle cells is the passion of physician-scientist Bernhard Kühn. He and his team of researchers are focused on cardiomyocytes, the cells of the heart muscle, and discovering ways to make them replicate and proliferate so as to enable the heart to heal itself in cases of heart failure or congenital defects. A pioneer in this area of study, Dr. Kühn is the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including the American College of Cardiology’s prestigious Young Investigator Award, the Basil O’Connor Award from the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation, and Scientist Development Grant from the American Heart Association, to name a few.

Clinical Activities

A board-certified pediatric cardiologist, Dr. Kuhn sees patients with heart muscle diseases (cardiomyopathy) in the outpatient clinic of the Heart Institute at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. For appointments, please call 412-692-7660.
