About the UPMC Transplant Program

At UPMC, we are dedicated to providing life-saving transplant options to all patients who will benefit. Since 1981, UPMC has performed more than 20,000 organ transplant surgery procedures, including liver, kidney, pancreas, small bowel, liver/small bowel, heart/lung, double-lung, single-lung, and multiple-organ transplants. As a pioneer in the field of solid-organ transplantation, our program has been consistently challenged with some of the most difficult and complex cases.

Our surgeons and specialists have drawn upon this breadth of experience to develop advancements that have resulted in new and improved treatment modalities for our patients.

We take pride in keeping the lines of communication open with patients, families, and referring physicians regarding status procedures, treatments, and follow-up care. Although transplantation is a complex, serious procedure, we maintain a personal, patient-focused approach that takes into consideration the stress and concerns many individuals experience.

Breakthrough Antirejection Therapies

UPMC is among the oldest and largest transplant programs in the United States. Under the pioneering direction of Dr. Thomas E. Starzl, UPMC was one of the first centers to use the breakthrough drugs to keep patients' immune systems from rejecting their new organs.

Also, we have a long history of helping to develop new antirejection therapies that work better with fewer side effects — so organ recipients can enjoy better health with fewer restrictions.

Pioneering Organ Transplant Procedures

UPMC experts have a distinguished history of pioneering and refining new transplant procedures, making it possible to provide a second chance at life for patients who otherwise would not have been a candidate for transplantation.

Our physicians and researchers have accomplished many historical firsts, giving hope to patients across the country and around the globe. Today, we are committed to honoring Dr. Starzl’s legacy by continuing to advance the field of transplantation.

  • 20,000+ transplants: Since 1981, UPMC has performed more than 20,000 adult and pediatric transplants, including liver, kidney, pancreas, heart, lung, and multi-organ procedures.
  • Living donor transplantation: UPMC’s programs for living-donor kidney and liver transplants help patients avoid lengthy wait times, improving outcomes and saving lives. UPMC leads the nation in living-donor liver transplant volume, offering patients faster access to life-saving procedure performed by some of the most experienced surgeons in the field of transplantation.
  • Leading advancements: Innovations include multi-organ transplants, robotic surgery, and machine perfusion technologies to enhance organ viability.
  • Patient-centered care: UPMC’s multidisciplinary approach ensures patients receive comprehensive care before, during, and after their transplant, with lifelong follow-up care.
  • Research and education: As part of the University of Pittsburgh Starzl Transplant Institute, UPMC drives innovation through clinical trials and research, preparing the next generation of transplant professionals.

Transplant Services for Every Need

With more than 40 years of experience, UPMC offers unmatched expertise in transplantation, with pre- and post-transplant services offered across the state of Pennsylvania.

We take pride in keeping the lines of communication open with patients, families, and referring physicians regarding status procedures, treatments, and follow-up care. Although transplantation is a complex, serious procedure, we maintain a personal, patient-focused approach that takes into consideration the stress and concerns many individuals experience.

Our experts take a multidisciplinary approach to treating disease. At UPMC, we offer the full scope of diagnosis, treatment, and management. This approach allows us to provide exceptional care to patients along the entire spectrum of disease. Our team also includes you – the referring physician. We will work with you and your team to ensure a seamless referral process and will collaborate with you to develop an individualized treatment plan that best fits the unique needs of your patient.

To provide the most effective care possible, we employ a comprehensive care mode, in which we begin to work with you and your patients early in their disease progression. Early referral allows our team to become familiar with your patient and their specific needs before they need a transplant. For patients who do require transplant, early referral helps us to address barriers and provide education about the transplant process to ensure they are an optimal candidate for transplant.
