Sleep Medicine

About Us

The UPMC Sleep Medicine Center is a multidisciplinary program incorporating respiratory medicine, psychiatry, otolaryngology, and bariatric surgery specialists. Research focuses on the pathophysiology of sleep-disordered breathing in patients with advanced cardiomyopathy, as well as clinical research in the medical therapy of obstructive sleep apnea and hypoventilation syndromes. The center utilizes advanced tools in molecular, physiologic, and clinical investigation, and works in collaboration with theUPMC Heart and Vascular Institute, the Department of Otolaryngology, and the Graduate School of Public Health

The Sleep Medicine Center, accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, performs approximately 2,000 sleep studies annually for adult patients with all types of sleep disorders. The staff at the UPMC Sleep Medicine Center includes board certified physicians, certified nurse practitioners, and registered sleep laboratory technologists.

Program Overview

Sleep Medicine Institute
The University of Pittsburgh Sleep Medicine Institute (UPSMI) is an integrated, multidisciplinary program encompassing research, teaching, and clinical care.
UPSMI is the first center of excellence established by the University’s NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI). The Institute leverages the expertise, infrastructure, and resources of the CTSI and its partners to offer multidisciplinary training opportunities for young researchers; support collaborative research initiatives across the lifespan with investigators from a wide range of disciplines; and to translate promising new treatments into practice.

Organizationally, the Institute’s focus on the complex association of sleep disorders, health, and disease, brings together experts engaged in research, clinical care, and educational programs throughout the University’s Schools of the Health Sciences. The formalization of this multidisciplinary institute integrates diverse strengths in sleep medicine including:

  • NIH-funded T32 training program in multidisciplinary 
  • Translational sleep medicine 
  • One of the top three NIH-funded sleep research programs in the United States
